We have a potentially catastrophic hurricane coming our way (at my time of typing – it is here!) Her name is Florence, and she is packing a punch to my area. I’ve lived in Eastern NC all my life, so I’m no stranger to forceful winds, sheets of rain, flooding, and the loss of electricity for days. This one, however, has had my nerves in a ball. As I type, it will be dark soon, and that’s when things will really get going. Even though it has been shifting slightly south, we will probably be in waterworld here for the next couple of weeks.

Homeschoolers are notorious for turning most anything into a lesson, and while I love unit studies, science experiments, books, and maps – I just have not been interested this time. This time, the kids are learning through real life rather than my latest Pinterest find. It takes much preparation to prepare for the unknown. Thankfully, I have my blueprint ready for our homeschool. At the start of the school year, I set a few minimums that had to be done for our school day, or for when you have to run on autopilot, and I’m so glad I did!
Isn’t that the beauty of homeschooling? We can be mobile and run from a hurricane, function for days without electricity, and in all kinds of weather and still give our kids a quality education. We “fanatics” can take advantage of the hurricane and can go all out with those cool science experiments, unit studies, and books – or go on a minimal schedule with our blueprints while real life is taking place.
I encourage you not to feel guilty about doing it all in these situations. We homeschooling mamas can be tough on ourselves at times. Do what you can. Take advantage of those real life moments. Whether it’s simply plotting the storm coordinates (which is all I’ve been doing), learning outdoor cooking skills, and especially helping others in need in your community. It all counts! I’ll close with one final thing to smile about, and another reason to be a fanatic: our local schools will probably have to make up days well into June, while we can enjoy our beaches when it’s less crowded and the seas are much calmer!
