For my first review of 2020, I was excited to have the opportunity to review the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com. This is my second year as a member of the Review Crew, and my second year using SchoolhouseTeachers.com. This membership offers a full curriculum for every grade, including many electives, from preschool through high school. Everytime I go digging around the website, I find something I didn’t see before!
What is SchoolhouseTeachers.com?
SchoolhouseTeachers.com is the curriculum site of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. There are over 400 course options for all ages. The courses vary in length from a few weeks to a full year or more, and is very affordable. One membership covers the entire family! SchoolhouseTeachers.com can be used as the core of your curriculum or to fill in gaps in your current curriculum. Classes are self-paced and are presented in a variety of formats.
There are so many features that it would be impossible to mention them all. In addition to the 400+ courses, there is an extensive video library with over 450 videos! The videos range from marriage to missionaries, apologetics, and entertainment for kids. My favorite is the several episodes of Drive Thru History (which is worth more than the cost of the subscription to SchoolhouseTeachers.com itself). The episodes even has quizzes! In addition to the courses and videos, you get access to several World Book libraries. The libraries are filled with video, interactive maps, timeline builders, and more! While looking around, I just found a terrific scavenger hunt! This is definitely not the set of burgundy colored World Books I had in 1986!
There are Focused Learning Centers available for when you need some extra help. Whether it be math, foreign language, or special needs, the centers direct you to courses, tips, or articles that can be of assistance for those who may struggle in a certain subject. I took a look at the Learning Centers available for high school, and there was help for recordkeeping, transcripts, college and career exploration, and more.
How we have been using SchoolhouseTeachers.com
This year, I decided to set aside our regular literature curriculum, and try the American Folklore course. We have thoroughly enjoyed stories, poems, and songs, and other various aspects of national folklife. It is a fantastic complement to our studies in American history this year.
My daughter completed a Marine Biology course this past spring and summer that she totally did own her own. The class utilized videos and websites, and helped her in note taking skills and independence. I reviewed SchoolhouseTeachers.com last year in a review, and one of our favorites was Digging For Treasure in Family Courses. We tried Search for Your Supper, a cooking scavenger hunt. The hunt provided recipes using only foods found in the Bible. The scripture location had to be looked up to find the correct ingredients for each recipe. The Daily Puzzlers were also a hit, and both kids have asked about doing more of those this year.
Don’t think that the kids are the only ones who benefit from SchoolhouseTeachers.com. There are courses and unit studies for parents, recipes, planners, and more. I’ve been eyeballing a few art courses for myself!
What I thought of SchoolhouseTeachers.com
I think it’s a fantastic program! It is very well worth the money, but like anything else, you must use it. I guarantee there is something for everyone. The hardest thing will be deciding what to use! The amount of options available can be somewhat overwhelming, but the layout makes it easy to navigate. I love that there is so much variety, flexible lesson plans, and an endless amount of resources packed all in one website! It truly is like a candy store for homeschoolers! The sweetest part is that it is on sale! For just $99 a year or $12 a month, you too can get the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership!
