Who else remembers having to have a scientific calculator back in high school? I did! Teachers and students alike jokingly said that we needed a separate class to understand how to use them! Well, that class never happened back then, but guess what? Now there is a class, and Triad Math, Inc. makes using the scientific calculator easy with Mastering the TI-30Xa Scientific Calculator: Augmented Intelligence for all 21st Century Students.
What is Mastering the TI30Xa?
Mastering the TI-30Xa Scientific Calculator: Augmented Intelligence for all 21st Century Students is a self-paced program that combines an interactive online tutorial as well as a physical book as the worktext. The lessons explain various basic functions of the TI-30Xa, as well as more advanced topics your student may encounter in upper level mathematics. Learning to master the TI-30Xa calculator will certainly save time, as well as make math easier by using the “tools” of modern technology.
“Mathematics is like a “contact sport. You must play and practice to master the necessary skills and knowledge. Treat it like a game. Have fun!” – Dr. Del
Craig Hane, Ph.D., aka Dr. Del is the creator of Mastering the TI-30Xa, and the voice behind the video content of the course. Dr. Del will gently lead your student through the course, as if he were sitting next to you at the kitchen table. My son and I both enjoyed his easy-to-follow instructions, and friendly tone throughout. He certainly made using the calculator non-intimidating and perhaps “fun”.
How to use the course
The book can be used alone to get through the course, however I recommend using the tutorial videos also. I found the videos to be beneficial in understanding the lesson, as you can watch exactly what Dr. Del is doing. In less than 10 minutes, Dr. Del explains everything you need to know. Mastering the TI-30Xa Scientific Calculator is made up of 25 lessons, and broken down into tiers. The first set of lessons (1-15) focus on addition/subtraction, negative numbers, percentages, square roots, fractions, and more basic math operations. Lessons 16-20 focus on concepts for trigonometry students. The last lessons (21-25) are designed for STEM Students.
The online tutorials are taught with the easy to use Moodle platform. From the Moodle dashboard, you will access the video lessons, PDFs, and grades. Each lesson consists of a pre-test, short video lesson, and a post test all online. There are PDFs available with lesson notes, exercises, solutions, and supplemental materials that mirror those in the workbook. Also, a forum is available to ask questions if needed.
What we thought of Mastering the TI30Xa
My son, currently in Algebra, says it is a useful course. He said he learned several things he can use in his current math curriculum. I tried a few of the lessons myself, and I thought they were simple, thorough, and doable for anyone. This course would be a great resource for all math students, specifically middle and high school.
