Fanatic News Flash – February

This post may contain affiliate links. It cost no extra to you, and any purchases are greatly appreciated!

I’m switching things up! I had started writing my monthly “What We’re Reading” post, and it was looking like a repeat of last month. Life happened. Rather than relist those with an additional book or two, I wanted to do something different. I thought maybe a newsletter-type post near the beginning of each month would be more practical. I’ll still include reading, as well as other topics of interest as to what’s coming up for the month.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com Review

I am thrilled to announce that I was selected to be on the Homeschool Review Crew for 2019! That means I get to try out a variety of homeschool products, use them with my kids in our homeschool, and give you a review of what we thought of them. This is great news for a curriculum junkie like myself, in that I will actually use these things with my family, and be held accountable for reporting our findings. It’s great news for you too! You will get our real opinion of a product after trying it ourselves for a few weeks.

My first assignment was a review of the Ultimate Annual Yearly Membership  from SchoolhouseTeachers.com. It is an online, subscription based, complete curriculum from preschool all the way through high school. I must confess….. I haven’t always been a huge fan of online products. Sure, my kids take math courses online, but that’s it. I am usually a boxed curriculum kind of gal. Huge, spiral bound teacher manuals, answer keys, workbooks – everything a “doing school at home mom” loves. It has only been a few years ago that I started becoming more eclectic. But still, I had to have my large, spiral manuals…….or so I thought.

Mid-Year Check In

Just a few short months ago, we were beginning our new school year. The freshness of new books, the brightness of new paper and notebooks, and the excitement of starting yet another amazing year! I carefully and purposefully planned, reviewed, and chose the best curriculum for my upcoming 7th and 9th grader. This was no-doubt going to be the best year ever! For the most part it has been. The only set back we’ve had was a major hurricane that hit 10 days into our new school year. We had to make some adjustments and change a few plans, but come through just fine.

What We’re Reading in January

It’s the start of a new year, and I am so excited about this month’s reading choices! There are so many things I love about the new year, and new books are near the top! During the holidays, our reading fell off a bit, but that is to be expected. I am looking forward to the quietness and fresh start of a new year. This post contains affiliate links.

This Isn’t a New Year’s Resolution. It’s an ALL YEAR Resolution!

At the start of every new year, people everywhere make resolutions. Losing weight, being more organized, and changing habits are probably the most popular. While I would like to do all those things, the one thing closest to my heart is homeschooling. Finding ways to improve, finding new things to implement, most of all – finding how to balance homeschooling with the rest of my life. Please tell me I’m not the only one struggling with balance!

Homeschoolminder Review

You can usually find me the first week of November surrounded by stacks of paper, a calculator, a calendar, my planner, and a large cup of coffee.  It is around this time of year, we have completed our first quarter of the school year.  As usual, I have procrastinated and am scrambling to meet my own deadlines.  Not this time.   Continue reading “Homeschoolminder Review”

What We’re Reading in October

I read several blogs, and one of my favorite things is seeing monthly posts of what other homeschool mamas and their kids are reading.  As a new blogger, and a lover of books, I wanted to do the same here.  I got a little behind over the past few weeks, so I’ll fill you in on what we’ve been reading the for the past six weeks.  Hopefully, I’ll be on a monthly schedule of what we’re reading, and post around the middle of each month.  This post contains affiliate links.   Continue reading “What We’re Reading in October”

Look It Up!

This post contains many affiliate links.  I have personally used and would recommend each of them.  All purchases cost no extra to you, and helps me keep blogging.

I have a beautiful aqua bookshelf that I keep some of my favorite things on.  Books.  There’s a section dedicated to the kids larger history and science books that are heavy and clunky.  There’s a section that contains a few of my personal books that I have not yet read, or that I am keeping handy for reference later.  My husband has part of it filled with Bible study materials.  There’s even a shelf for the dog that contains her toy box.  I want to zoom in on the bottom self.  This shelf has books old and new that I’ve collected over the years.  They are not part of our curriculum, although we can use them for most of our subjects.  It’s what I call our Reference Shelf.  It’s where the kids go to when they hear three words, “look it up.”   Continue reading “Look It Up!”

7th Grade Curriculum 2018-19

This post contains affiliate links.

(Some of the content is a repeat of my previous post, but some things are different for my 7th grader)

Making plans for my 7th grader was slightly easier.  One, because I’ve done it with my guinea pig, I mean my first born.  Second, because he’s a “get it done” kind of kid.  Last year, when there was an end in sight, he doubled up and completed his math curriculum a month early.  He did well, and was off playing in the sun, perfecting his trampoline skills, and just being a boy.   He’s a sharp kid, but there are skills he still needs much work on.  Neatness is a big one.  Due dates are another.  Now that he’s in middle school, I want to help him put as much effort in his school work as he does other things.  I also want to leave time for him to tinker at home, and learn valuable skills working with his dad when he can.

9th Grade Curriculum 2018-19

This post contains affiliate links.  This year has been one of the most difficult and most exciting I have ever planned , correction – still planning.  Maybe it’s because I have a ninth grader and am nervous about not doing everything “right”.  Maybe it’s because my expectations have not been as high as they should have in past years.  Maybe it’s because I’ve had some kind of construction going on in our home the last half of the summer, and my mind has just not been on it.  The reality is, it’s time to get started, and I’ll probably never be fully ready!
