Isn’t that the truth? October is one of my favorite months of the year! From the weather to the colors, I love the seasonal change October brings. I also like the things to celebrate this month. Of course, there is Pumpkin Day, Candy Corn Day, and Frankenstein Day, but there are also several others to celebrate every day!
October. We have settled into our homeschool routine, and things are starting to run smoothly. I have to say, as I’ve thought in years past, that I wish we would have started taking the month of October off rather than a full, hot, NC summer break. It’s hard to break the habit of following a traditional school calendar, and I’m a little late in our homeschooling game to make those kind of changes now. This has nothing to do with my post, just a little tidbit of advice to pass on to newbies. It’s your school now, follow whatever calendar you choose! Speaking of calendar, I hope you find these quirky days as much fun to celebrate as I do. Believe it or not, I have learned so much about random stuff through putting these together. It’s even helped me answer a Jeopardy question or two!

Small celebrations last month
One thing we learned is that there are several words in the English language that do not rhyme. The most popular is orange, no matter what Eminem may say otherwise. We also learned the origin of the ampersand, as well as the importance of not making your bed right away. Coffee, cheeseburgers, and guacamole (not all together) were also celebrated food holidays.
A couple of local things made last month’s list too. North Carolina Day and Talk Like a Pirate Day. Pirate stories and folklore are common in my area, and just last month, my daughter and I went to a Pirate Festival in Beaufort. I purchased a book, Unlocking Blackbeard’s Skeletons, that I am looking forward to reading in the winter months. Bonus – the author is a homeschool graduate, and it was a delight to talk with her and her family. If you are from North Carolina, or interested in NC history, I highly recommend A Nutshell History of North Carolina. It’s a unique book with facts, stories, and quirky humor that should be required reading for all NC students.
Ideas for October
It’s hard to highlight which days to celebrate, because they are all so good! Today is Homemade Cookies Day, and I’m really wishing someone would bring be a batch about now. I guess Oreos will have to do while I type this. Get your sillies started early this month by celebrating Get Funky Day followed by Mad Hatter Day. Maybe you and your kids can roast pumpkin seeds, or have a seed-spittin’ contest as part of the fun, because it all falls on the 6th of October. Interested in learning to play chess? I did not learn until I got a fantastic product to review for TOS Review Crew. It still is one of my favorite reviews!
Moving on to celebrating food, if you’ve never tried to make your own Pierogis, I highly recommend this recipe. My husband and daughter made them this past year, and they were delicious! I bet any kid will dig fossil day with these Halloween Dinosaur Eggs, and there’s a nice discount to apply, although I’m not sure for how long. You could even combo them with Reptile Awareness Day, or save them as a candy alternative for trick-or-treaters. Another day to celebrate for all is Dictionary Day. (Pardon my word choices, I’m excited about some word ideas I have coming soon).
Don’t forget to celebrate some of the interesting people who have birthdays this month. It’s a great time of year to get into R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps Series, brush up on manners with Emily Post, or get artsy with this Frankenstein Meets Picasso art project!
