Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 Review

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew

Would you like to know this homeschooling mom’s sanity saver? The answer is simple: I don’t teach math. That’s right. I haven’t taught math since my kids were in 4th grade. They are in high school now. How in the world have I managed to pull that off? With Teaching Textbooks Math, of course! Teaching Textbooks has been my go-to for most of our homeschooling journey. So, when asked if I would be interested in checking out the upgrade, Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0,  it was a no-brainer.

What is Teaching Textbooks Math

As we like to say in the south, it’s the best thing since sliced bread! For purpose of this review, I’ll fill you in on the details, though. Teaching Textbooks is a digital math curriculum starting at the third grade level, with courses offered all the way to Pre-Calculus. If unsure of where to start, placement tests are available on their website. Math is taught using a spiral approach, reviewing what the student has learned throughout the course. It is fully student-independent, meaning all lessons are taught and graded by Teaching Textbooks. It is really like having a math tutor by your side, as each and every problem is explained step-by-step. That’s my favorite thing about Teaching Textbooks – every single problem is explained if needed.

Subscriptions for the course are for 12 months, with an option to pause the program for 3 months without taking time out of the subscription. This is good for those who school year-round, or have any kind of life interruption. The grade book is accessible for a lifetime. The program is very affordable, ranging from around $40-70 dollars per subscription. There are also discounted options available for large families.

What’s new & improved with Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0?

The biggest change would be that Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 is an app. It can now be used on a large range of mobile devices, such as Android, iOS tablets, and Kindle. The app allows six lessons at a time to be downloaded, which is great if you spend a lot of time on the go, or have occasional internet issues. Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0 can also still be used on desktops and laptops. As far as academic content, the two are equivalent, besides the remastering of the audiovisual content.

There are several added features. The grade book now calculates a running course average. Optional emails are also sent to parents, informing them with what the student has completed for that day. Other fun features for the student include wallpapers, sound effects, more “buddy” choices, and kids can earn “stickers” for a job well done. Another neat feature is the use of the scratchpad to work problems out right on your tablet. Those customized “extras” are just some of the details you will find with Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0.

A look at the cool “extras”!

A brief walk-thru of Teaching Textbooks Math 4.0

The student logs in, watches a short lecture, completes 5 practice problems, does around 20 math problems from the current as well as past lessons, then the lesson is complete. Simple, right? It gets better! If the student is stumped on a math problem, they can get a hint. Depending on the type of problem, you get two tries. If the problem is still incorrect, the student should watch as the problem is explained step by step. It is still marked incorrect, but hopefully the student will see where they went wrong, and will be able to do it correctly in the future.

For me, it is even easier. “Gabe, be sure to do a math lesson today.” That’s it. Isn’t it great? Now, I do go back and check to make sure his grade is in a range I am comfortable with. I also view the online book to see what he’s studying, and upcoming topics. As far as grading, it is done for you. Planning is also simple, they just do the next thing.
