Homeschool Convention Tips: How to Navigate Without Feeling Overwhelmed

I barely remember the first homeschool convention I attended—but I definitely remember how it felt.

I walked into a giant room buzzing with excited homeschool moms, stacks of curriculum I’d never heard of, and vendors enthusiastically explaining things I didn’t even know I needed. Within the first hour, I was equal parts inspired, confused…I left that convention with a bag full of art supplies, a couple of dissection specimens, and absolutely no clear plan.

In short—I was completely overwhelmed.  I had no idea how to navigate an event like that, and I definitely could have used a little guidance. So if you’re heading to your first convention—or even if you’ve been to a few and still feel a little unsure—this is for you.

Why Attend a Homeschool Convention?

Whether you attend in person or virtually, homeschool conventions have so many benefits. They can leave you feeling encouraged, inspired, and full of fresh ideas… and also just a little mentally overloaded by the end of the day.

I’ve experienced both more than once, and I truly believe they’re worth the investment. I’m not an expert, but over the years I’ve learned a few things, so let me share a few tips to help you navigate your next homeschool convention with a little more confidence.

Traditional Convention Benefits

Where do you even begin? The workshops, the exhibit hall, the girl time… maybe even a little uninterrupted thinking time? All of these are part of what makes a homeschool convention so valuable.

  • Speakers & Workshops – One of the biggest highlights is learning from experienced voices in the homeschool world. I’ve had the opportunity to sit under some of the best, like Heidi St. John, Andrew Pudewa, Joel Salatin, and even Kirk Cameron! The amount of insight packed into a single weekend is incredible. You’ll walk away with practical strategies, fresh ideas, and encouragement you didn’t even realize you needed. Honestly, it’s a bit like a pep rally—for you.
  • Exhibit Hall – I’ve been known to spend hours here—the kind where you forget lunch and head straight to a late dinner. Being able to see and touch curriculum before buying is invaluable—especially if you’re still figuring out what works best for your family. (If that’s you, check out my 10 Tips for Choosing a Homeschool Curriculum.) Even better, you can talk directly with authors, publishers, and reps who know their products inside and out and are happy to answer your questions. And yes—there are often convention-only discounts!
  • Girl Time – This might be my favorite.  There’s just something about a weekend with like-minded moms—road trips, late-night chats, shared meals, and lots of laughter. (My husband is perfectly happy to stay home and hear all about it afterward… though you’ll definitely see plenty of spouses at these events.)These are just a few highlights—but they’re hard to beat.

Still, sometimes attending in person just isn’t possible. Maybe it’s the cost, the distance, or maybe it just feels a little too… peopley.  (And yes, conventions are definitely peopley)

If that’s not your season, there’s another great option.

Virtual Homeschool Conventions: A Great Alternative

Virtual conventions offer many of the same benefits—without the travel, hotel costs, or full social overload. You may miss the exhibit hall, but you can still learn from excellent speakers right from home. You can pause, rewind, and take notes at your own pace—no rushing from session to session. And if you want a little connection, invite a couple of friends over, set out some snacks, and make a day of it.

Another fun perk? Many virtual conventions include a “swag bag”—a collection of digital goodies like discounts, samples, and resources from vendors. It’s like the exhibit hall… without carrying the bags. The best part? Lifetime access to the recordings—so you don’t have to choose between sessions or try to absorb everything in one weekend.

Homeschool Convention Tips

I’ll leave you with a few tips I’ve learned from my own homeschool convention experiences:

Heading to a homeschool convention? Don’t walk into the vendor hall without a plan. This simple shopping list will help you stay focused, avoid impulse buys, and keep track of what you actually need.

    Tips For In-Person Conventions:

    • Go in with a rough plan for your homeschool. Knowing what you need helps you focus—and skip what you don’t.
    • Register early. Hotels fill up fast, and many offer discounts for convention attendees.
    • Set a budget for the vendor hall. It’s very easy to overspend.
    • Consider bringing a rolling cart…..you won’t regret it.
    • Bring a cute notebook (and your favorite pens!)—you’ll want to take lots of notes.
    • Don’t get overwhelmed in the exhibit hall. Ask questions, take notes, and remember—you don’t have to plan your entire year in one weekend.
    • Be selective with sessions. Information overload is real. Pick a few favorites and consider purchasing recordings to watch later.
    • Take breaks. Some of the best moments happen in the in-between—resting, reflecting, or chatting with other homeschoolers.
    • If possible, leave the kids at home. Many conventions offer activities, but having uninterrupted time helps you think more clearly.

    Tips For Virtual Conventions:

    • Set aside distraction-free time. Even a short, focused block makes a big difference.
    • Have a plan for younger kids—busy bags, quiet activities, or recruiting older siblings (paid, of course!).

If you’re ready to attend a homeschool convention in 2026, here are a few great places to start your search:

    • Great Homeschool Conventions – Hosts multiple large conventions across the U.S. each year with well-known speakers and a huge exhibit hall.
    • Teach Them Diligently – Faith-based conventions held in several locations with a strong community focus.
    • Virginia Homeschool Convention – One of the largest state conventions, hosted by HEAV (Home Educators Association of Virginia).  This is the convention I’ve attended, and I love that it falls right when we’ve wrapped up our school year, which makes it feel like a perfect way to reset and plan ahead.
    • THRIVE! Homeschool Conference – If you’re in North Carolina, this is another great option. I’ve attended this one as well.
    • Under God:  A 1776 Celebration Summit – FREE April 13-16, 2026
    • Sonlight Virtual Homeschool Convention – An excellent virtual option with live sessions, Q&A opportunities, and the chance to connect with other                                                                     homeschool families—all from home.
    • Homeschool.com Virtual Conference – An on‑demand virtual homeschool conference designed to support and equip homeschool families with sessions you can watch anytime.

You can also check with your state homeschool organization, as many host their own annual conventions.

    Most of all—have fun.

Homeschool conventions, whether in person or virtual, have a way of bringing fresh inspiration, renewed focus, and a much-needed boost of energy. You might walk in feeling unsure (or completely overwhelmed), but you’ll likely leave encouraged and full of new ideas.

Take what works for your family, leave what doesn’t, and don’t feel like you have to do it all.

And maybe—just maybe—you’ll come home with a little more clarity… fewer random specimens than I did… and if you’re lucky, a fun memory like spotting Kirk Cameron along the way.
